A QUICK LOOK AT ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION AS A PARADIGM FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Njah BASSEY ETTA1, Emmanuel NYONG INYANG1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The need to sustain our environment has become a
matter of concern at global level. But, how to create this
awareness and drive certain programmes and policies to
achieve and change behavior on this issue depends on the
communication strategies applied to drive such purposes.
Thus, the need for Environmental Communication – a new
transdisciplinary paradigm that involves the use of
communication - approaches the principles and techniques
to convey environmental information and data among
people. The need for environmental sustainability through
environmental communication is what this research article
suggests. The agenda-setting approach of the media can
best be applied to achieve this goal. Communication is a
vital tool that, if properly applied, can help environmental
sustainability and promote healthy environmental
practices.
Keywords: environmental communication, environmental
sustainability.

BIBLE AND LITERATURE FOR THE (ORTHODOX) THEOLOGICAL ENGLISH CLASSROOM

Ana-Magdalena PETRARU1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The importance of the bible as/ for literature cannot be
denied and outstanding developments such as Northrop
Frye’s to the field (The Great Code: The Bible and Literature,
1981) testify to this reality. However, as an English for
Specific Purposes (ESP) trainer, the purpose of our paper
is to account for the extent to which canonical literature
can be brought into play to the Theological English
classroom to improve our students’ biblical and literary
knowledge and develop their productive and receptive
skills in a communicative language teaching (CLT)
environment; thus, if Thomas Mann’s Joseph and His
Brothers (1930-1943) can be definitely considered for study
at a Romanian Orthodox faculty, José Saramago’s
controversial Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991) and
Cain (2009) less so, due to the materialistic atheism
prophesized. Consequently, our material consists of
several canonical works, the above mentioned ones
included, and our methods draw on general and ESP
teaching methodology without ignoring the purpose of a
Christian English teacher (CET). We will discuss the results
of our research emphasizing the general impact of Bible
and literature on the professional and personal development
of theological students in their academic life and likely
career (priests, sacral artists or social workers in a Christian
environment).
Keywords: Bible and literature, CET, CLT, ESP, Orthodox

THE REFLECTION OF SOCIAL INEQUALITIES IN MASS-MEDIA

Georgeta STEPANOV1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The media coverage of social problems, including the
social inequalities, of the ways in which they can be solved,
of the implementation manner of the state’s social policies
regarding this field, and live quality in general, represents
one of the major objectives of mass-media. Therefore,
journalism has to ensure the right of every citizen to
information, to promote opinion pluralism, to ensure the
unhindered movement of ideas, conceptions, theories and
to create a favourable environment for the control on
behalf of the authorities of the activities of the public
authorities, therefore stimulating the continual
development processes of the democratic principles of
socio-politic cohabitation. This type of activity legitimates
journalism as an important form of social engagement,
efficient information and communication means, an ideal
instrument for the training and study of the public opinion.

Ion SÎRBU1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The article “The Expansion of Aesthetic Values and
Human Security” is devoted to human security and the
role of morality, the role of the expansion of ethical values,
which strengthens them. The processes of expansion of the
ethical values in social life, in the practical activity of
humankind in nature and medicine, are influenced by the

THE CHARACTER MIMI FROM THE OPERA “LA BOHÈME” BY GIACOMO PUCCINI. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LIBRETTO, STORY AND CHARACTER, AS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION

Doina Dimitriu URSACHE1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The most representative work belonging to Pucini “La
Bohème” sets up a portrait of the young Bohemians from
the Latin neighbourhood of the Paris in the 1840s, with
emphasis on the relationship between Rodolfo and Mimi.
The opera is inspired by the novel “Scènes de la vie de
bohème” belonging to the French writer Henri Murger and
is based on a libretto belonging to Luigi Illinca and
Giussepe Giacosa. The four acts present most of the details
of the novel and of the play. Using the tragic love story
between Rodolfo and Mimi, the composer presents not
only the passion the spiritual unrest of two youngsters, but
also the romanticism full of artistic verve from the France
of that beautiful period (Belle Époque). The young
characters and their story represent the defining elements
of Puccini’s work, which has been fascinating the public
over the years. In this studio we shall try to establish the
connection between the story, character and music.

GIOACHINO ROSSINI - IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (ROSINA). STORIES, PERSONS, ARTISTIC COMMUNICATION

Cristina SIMIONESCU1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The work of Rossini Il Barbiere di Siviglia (L’Inutile
Precauzione or Almaviva), written on Cesare Sterbini’s
libretto in 1816, originates in the play Le Barbier de Séville
or Précaution inutile by Pierre-Augustin Caron de
Beaumarchais. Stendhal states that it is “a masterpiece”.
About the Rosinian work, and Grigore Constantinescu
defines it as “a model of concision and musical and
theatrical logic whose freshness was not shadowed by
nearly two centuries of existence. Although Rossini uses
many fragments of his previous works, the way he has
built his architecture impresses through the unity of
expression and the coherence of solutions”.
Keywords: comic opera, character, libretto.

Abstract
The aim of the study is to identify the level of depression
among parents of children diagnosed with a rare disease.
Materials and methods: a number of 29 parents were
included in the research. Parents had to complete the items
of Beck Depression Inventory. A number of twelve
questions were address and socio-demographic data were
also registered. Data were processed using IBM SPSS
Statistics, version 23. Results and discussion: parents have
a minimal depression (M=8.27 ± 11.70). Marital status and
child’s age were identified to relate with the level of
depression. Parents who have children aged between 6 and
12 years old score higher on BDI compared to the groups
0-6 years old or of those older than 12. Parents who
registered higher scores on depression were more
frequently involved in psychological or psychiatric
consultations. Parents who believe the mother is more
involved have higher scores on BDI. Conclusion: The
support for parents having a child diagnosed with a rare
disease must be offered by a multidisciplinary team and
the psychological care of both children and parents must
be considered.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND EDUCATIONAL ETHOS IN DIDACTIC COMMUNICATION

Maria ROMAN1, Vasile ROMAN2    << Back to contents

Abstract
The diversity of teaching methods in academic
institutions, as well as the tendency to digitalise the
educational process, challenges the teaching staff to
identify and use elements that add educational value.
Studies show that great emphasis is placed on the
development of emotional intelligence, as a foundation for
building interpersonal relationships. The Romanian reality
proves that, in its attempt to adept itself to the demands
of the European education, Romanian education lost sight
of the national ethos, which also plays a major role in the
development of the educational process.
Keywords: emotional intelligence, interpersonal
relationships, ethos, teaching, national values.

ECONOMIC INFLUENCES ON MEDIA PRACTICES IN NIGERIA: A CLASSICAL MARXIAN PERSPECTIVE

Ukam Ivi NGWU1, Kalita Joseph ARUKU2, David Atianabeshe EJISHIE3, Peter O. INYALI4    << Back to contents

Abstract
The present economic challenges in Nigeria has
worsened media struggle for survival. Nigerian mass
media are constantly engaging on unnecessary praisesinging
of members of the political class and propagating
campaign of calumny and negative media coverage on
perceived opposition members of the political structure.
This elitist dominance and hegemony of media contents in
Nigeria has continued unabated without recourse to their
watchdog role as members of the fourth estate of the realm.
This has resulted in having the mass media working and
serving only the interest of the members of the ruling class
in the society while the interest of the common man are
being jeopardised, neglected and ignored. This paper
adopted the political economic theory which indicts the
mass media in the production, reproduction and
legitimating ideas of the members of the ruling class who
in most cases have the economic capacity to own, control,
sponsor advertisement and foot the bills needed for the
production and distribution of media to its consumers.
This paper concluded that economic influences are greatly
responsible for the distorted media contents we get in our
mass media today and as such, advice media consumers
to exercise due care in the course of consumption. The
paper recommended government intervention in the
media sector by injecting funds to help reduced these
economic influences and encourage an independent media.
