Abstract Watching television has become a habitual action of human beings. In the context of the relationship between mass media and identity, television is considered as the main source that could help to reshape and develop the identity of audience considering that television is able to provide the image and meaning to the audience in establishing their identity (MORLEY, 1986; SILVERSTONE, 1994). THE ENVY

Mihai ŞLEAHTIŢCHI1    << Back to contents

Abstract In the case of envy, as it results from many specialized sources, we are dealing with an extremely pernicious phenomenon. Regardless of how it is approached - as "an unpleasant state, along with shame and guilt, causing difficulties of psychological regulation and social adaptation," as "an ensemble of simpler emotional reactions, in various proportions and combinations (such as hostility, feelings of inferiority and injustice), or as something that conveys the expression of "emotional constructs associated” with “a significant specific weight" (like the state of jealousy, hope or schadenfreude) - each time it appears as a complex social emotion centered around "the desire to acquire the attributes or things that another person possesses". In uttering the word envy, we refer to the "selfish feeling of sorrow, tribulation, oddness, caused by the successes or the good situation of another", to a "tumultuous and obsessive state caused by the awareness of the fact that for the moment, we do not possess what one possesses, "or “an inner plague, through which the sadistic pleasure of talking bad about our friends, of criticizing the qualities of our acquaintances and defaming the beloved of another, insinuating that he/she is unfaithful, is constantly appearing". The passion that unleashes at last stays unconfessed because, in fact, "it is impossible to confess it". Envy is "mostly silent," but "always active," being implied in a hidden way “in the judgments and choices of those we come in contact with". Following, to a certain extent, R. Descartes, we could say that any one of those who surrender to envy sooner or later display an "earthly face" caused by the circulation of a "vicious" blood, and a "black yellowish"gallbladder. As soon as a certain sense of control is put on envy, the life of each of the individuals who were not so long ago characterized by the inability to enjoy the success of others starts to radically change, knowing a new measure and a new beginning. Once out of the unlimited influence of the "neighbor’s goat" syndrome, these individuals realize that they have a healthy way of building constructive relationships, with a mentality of solidarity and "being" instead of "having". Keywords: envy, social comparison, the effects of envy, diminishing envy.

THE INDEPENDENCE OF MASS MEDIA – AT THE BORDER BETWEEN A STATED GOAL AND REALITY

Mihail ORZEAŢĂ1    << Back to contents

Abstract Mass media independence is guaranteed by the laws and other national and international normative acts in order to ensure freedom of speech and to correctly inform the public opinion about the relevant aspects of the society. Mass media professionals accepted the conduct rules included in the deontological codes which ensure the independence of the means of communication as well as the objectivity, impartiality and accuracy of informing the public opinion. Mass media independence is violated by some politicians, businessmen and owners of mass communication means in order to influence the public opinion and to fulfil their personal goals and interests. Keywords: freedom of press, the journalists’ codes of ethics, bias mass media, censor, self-censorship.

THE ETHICAL VALUES OF MASS MEDIA AND THE SIDE-SLIPS OF THE ROMANIAN JOURNALISM SCENERY

Margareta ANDREESCU1    << Back to contents

Abstract The basic principle of BBC is trust. Journalists are impartial, independent and honest. Everything that a journalist does takes into account the public and the audience. The most important principles within the organization are creativity and quality promotion. BBC offers the highest editorial and ethical standards in broadcasting its shows and services. Not all the televisions have a very high capital in order to develop more elaborated and profound news programmes and that is why they prefer to achieve entertainment shows that are less expensive and attract large audiences. The lack of financial resources severely decreases the independence of TV channels. The lack of financial capital makes the audiovisual mediums to become more easily manipulated by particular interest groups. Some TV channels received state financing through advertising contracts offered by institutions subordinated to the government Keywords: news programmes, editorial standards, financing, information, accuracy.

DEONTOLOGICAL HIGHLIGHTS ON THE COVERAGE OF MURDER CASES ON ONLINE PLATFORMS IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

Ludmila RUSNAC1    << Back to contents

Abstract An increasing number of media consumers are accessing daily digital platforms to get informed. In this way, the deontological coordination of media activity in the online environment is becoming more and more pronounced in the eyes of public opinion but also on decision makers. In the reflection of the tragic events with the involvement of minors, it is more insisting on how to reflect these cases than on the coverage of the essence of the event. In this sense, journalists’ documentation is often superficial; it does not analyze all causes that generate the problem, the consequences and the social reflex that triggered the event’s coverage. The reflection of cases of violence against children should be done with a lot of responsibility, the events should be presented in context, the primary consideration being to treat the social problem itself and not to show the drama of the particular cases. Keywords: digital platforms, social violence, murder cases, drama, deontological responsibility, reflection of violence.

THE MESSAGE UNDER THE FORM OF PRESS RELEASE

Margareta ANDREESCU1    << Back to contents

Abstract The elements of communication are centred on the message. When we speak our speech represents the message. Its content can be addressed to only one person or to millions of people. Mass communication messages break the boundaries of interpersonal communication. They are built and influenced according to the laws of the market and the media product, meaning the message, behaves exactly like a commodity. The character (the spokesperson during a press release in front of a camera or during a press conference) represents one component of the message structure, and of the message expressiveness. The explanation is simple: the character encompasses all the elements of the actor’s art (mimicry, the expressiveness of the body movements, the expressiveness of the look etc.), as well as the characterisation and suggestion capacity of the relationships between characters or of the relationship between the character and the world of objects which is part of the frame. Ambient arts, the costumes, the make-up and especially the light (together, all these elements form the design of the frame) complete the arsenal of the filmed image. Keywords: communication services, spokesperson, word, media, society.

THE NEGATIVE IMPLICATIONS OF MODERN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES ON THE PRINTED PRESS

Georgeta STEPANOV1    << Back to contents

Abstract The use of new information technologies in the processes of conception and development of the traditional written press began to be more intensified at the beginning of the 21stcentury. Due to this fact, the competitive capacity of printed media has considerably increased, while the conflict with the accelerated rhythm of online media communication has been reduced. The intensification of the printing press activity has, however, not only positive but also negative consequences, because as a result of this process (due to the assimilation of new information technologies), the editorial model of the traditional printed press got several changes in the current operational practices, which consequently imposed new standards in journalistic activity. The new standards have facilitated and put production firstly, seriously affecting the quality of the journalistic materials, in particular, and the quality of the creation process, as a whole. Keywords: printed press, modern information technologies, creative process, journalistic product, blogs, social networks, media convergence, design, editorial style, periodical, mass-media.

ONLINE JOURNALISM BETWEEN REALITY AND FICTION

Vasile ROMAN1    << Back to contents

Abstract A brief review of the institution of journalism highlights the main changes that have appeared in the behaviour of the journalist and of the public, as well as the changes in the perception of the two entities regarding the reality in which they live. In its endeavour to inform the public, the journalist’s duty is to reflect society in its whole and diversity, also granting press access to minority and individual opinions because the public has the right to know not just the information and ideas received either favourably or indifferently or the ones that are regarded as inoffensive, but also the ones that offend, shock or annoy, since these are the requirements of pluralism, tolerance and open spirit and without them a democratic society could never exist. Keywords: journalism, journalist, reality, fiction, truth.

NATION BRANDING THROUGH TRAVEL WRITING

Andi SÂSÂIAC¹, Adrian BRUNELLO²    << Back to contents

Abstract Our intention in this article was to display the way in which travel writing can be used by governmental institutions, and not only, as an instrument of nation branding, by focusing mainly on Peter Hurley’s travelogue about Romania, The Way of the Crosses (2013). Our assumption was that Romania is in the position of struggling to craft an improved image in the eyes of its Western partners and outline a profile framed around motifs such as unspoiled rural landscapes, which have inspired foreign visitors during the last five centuries. Travel writing itself has raised controversy, as some consider it as a literary work while others assign it to journalism. However, although there are indeed many elements which are also found in journalistic products, a certain consensus has been reached, that travel writing represents at least a literary subgenre with the main feature of disseminating ethnic and national images and, thus, ‘culturally translating’ a distant, exotic place. Moreover, we shall see that such governmental attempts in nation branding through travel writing are not really an innovation, as similar efforts were made, in the case of Romania, no less than eighty years ago. Keywords: nation branding, national images, travel writing.
