EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

Lucian BĂLĂNUŢĂ1    << Back to contents

Abstract One of the most important layers of the popular struggle from a totalitarian regime towards a democratic political system depends on the freedom of expression and the responsibility of delivering credible information. In contrast with traditional media, digital media with its sum of components allows an uncontrolled flow of information, lacking hierarchy and making collective action easier. Dominated by a series of anti-governmental protests, starting from late 2010, numerous regimes from Middle East and the North Africa region misjudged the importance of social media in this regard. Thus, using this specific mass information tool in the context of a collective popular action, it becomes a vehicle for breaking the monopoly of the use of information, knowledge and expertise. Through a series of qualitative and longitudinal analysis, using the case study of community building before the Egyptian uprising and the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak, this paper aims to offer the proper context regarding the impact of social media on the political developments. Keywords: communication, Egypt, revolution, social media.

THE MANIPULATION THROUGH MEDIA, FROM CONCEPT TO PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Dana GALANTON1    << Back to contents

Abstract The current article highlights the way in which a precarious cultural level of journalists - especially from television - can have serious social and political consequences. The text speaks about the cultural media sphere and the shortcomings that make the manipulation possible, such as: education deficiencies in the spiritual area of beliefs, religions, confessions, obvious shortcomings in a European Union that has refused to recognize its Judeo-Christian roots in its Constitution. In the context of ignorance and lack of knowledge of some basic elements of our history, the unprepared and poorly educated public opinion can easily be manipulated. It is clear, therefore, that lack of cultural knowledge can lead to serious media communication errors that can lead to further manipulation. The text includes media cases from the so sensitive sphere of spiritual life, where both politicians and journalists, but also the general public, more often than not, have questionable knowledge. Area, where, the general culture, but also the nuances, are compulsory, but also responsible for the long-standing beliefs of the public. Keywords: cultural manipulation, media, freedom of expression, cultural criterion, symbolic transfer.

THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF MODERN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES ON JOURNALISTIC PRODUCTION. THE CASE OF WRITTEN PRESS

Georgeta STEPANOV1    << Back to contents

Abstract The technology based on new principles of journalistic production, as a result of the involvement of modern information technologies in the traditional operational practices, reconfigured the intra-media relational framework, projecting new action contexts and new forms of media competition. Traditional media elements, including the written press, consciously assimilated modern technologies and largely valued the opportunities offered by the online environment especially due to survival reasons and to maintain their traditional place and role on the informational market. The new possibilities of the written press, resulting from the implication of modern technologies in the journalistic creation and production, are firstly connected to the broadening of the speed and of the distribution routes of journalistic products, secondly to inserting multimedia contents in the online versions of the traditional periodical publications and thirdly to the interactivity of the end product. Keywords: written press, modern information technologies, activity principles, operational practices, journalistic product, periodical, online version, multimedia content, media convergence, interactivity.

Lucian BĂLĂNUŢĂ1    << Back to contents

Abstract The paradygm change from traditional to digital media has numerous angles of approach. One of them is tracking the type of devices used by consumers in order to access a particular media product. Although radio stations are constantly aired and listened to in real-time, using receiver devices, their online extension is subject to changes in consumption habits. Thus, broadcasters are in a continuous search for new editorial directions in order to face digital media competition and appearances on search engines. Radio online platforms that offer daily news, audio and video streamings often meet new challenges in order to adapt to current tendencies of connection. This study emphasizes how online outputs of a regional public radio such as Radio România Iaşi are being accessed using data from Google Analytics, underlining the consumption behaviour of the interested user and stressing a market tendency in this regard. THE PODCAST AS A FORM FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE RADIO PRODUCT

Mariana MARCU1    << Back to contents

Abstract The radio product, over time, has experienced several stages of evolution, all of them related to the degree of technology in the field and the requirements of the media market. If originally the radio message producers were concerned about the transmission of messages at a distance, subsequently the basic objective was focused on the radio’s ability to conserve and transmit the product over time too. Thus, certain features of the radio message such as ephemeralness and the impossibility of hearing a particular type of radio product have become history. Thanks to audio podcasts, today’s radio products are more accessible and varied. The access to favourite programs in the free time of the media consumer, not in broadcast time according to the program grid, determines a high degree of loyalty towards the public, especially today when the people signal out a continuous shortage of time. Keywords: podcast, radio product, information technologies, digital audio file, radio program, digital format, online radio, multimedia elements, hypermedia, broadcast, radio streaming, listening audience, the broadcast.

Manipulation is not something new, nor is mass-media.
The causes of manipulation are different, but in our opinion, it is important to see which are related with the human psychology, and the psychology of the Romanian people.
