MEDIA COMMUNICATION IN THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Andrei DUMBRĂVEANU1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has divided the world into
groups of people who believe and who do not believe in
the existence of the SARS-COV.2 virus, who accept and
who are against vaccination. The SARS-COV.2 virus
appears in the socio-human environment. It is a living,
microbiological organism reproduced by the human body
and propagated in the social environment. The COVID-19
pandemic led to extreme situations for the state’s
institutions and for the social ones, developed their activity
capacities during crisis, presenting the weaknesses of the
connections of the management at different levels and of
the horizontal connections on the horizontal between the
citizens and the social groups. SARS-CoV.2 also entered
the media communication, where it shed light on the way
in which the media exerts its information, sensibilisation,
culturalization and formation functions of the socio-human
values.
Keywords: pandemic, factors, politics, cultural, social,
religion, medicine, social institutions, virus, social cohesion, flu.

TRANSHUMANISM AND THE DICHOTOMIES SPECIFIC TO THE HUMAN BEING OR FROM THE HUMAN BEING WITH MEANING TO THE MEANING OF THE HUMAN BEING

Georgel RUSU1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The attitude and the behaviour of the human being,
most often, represent the result of some mental processes
which assume a polarity of possibilities and wishes related
to the subject. This aspect represents a precursory of the
manifestation of personality and it may contribute to
creativity and individuality. A transhuman course of the
being refers to “an engagement” on the path of
“preconceptions,” of a planned behaviour. The result
means a degree of “limitation” for the freedoms of the
individual according to “the depth” of the intervention
practiced by its body. There are no ways to develop
morality, love, walking on the path of perfection according
to perceptions of an affective or religious nature. Upgraded
with physical artefacts and other chemical dosages, with
new ways of bionic reaction, stimulated with the help of
artificial intelligence, the individual “overcomes” the state
of the being and practically becomes a prisoner and a slave
of technology on extended terms of “life.”Therefore, far
from bringing with it unsuspected liberties that would
make a “man more human,” those manifestations of
increased capacities bring with them dependence and
limitation.
Keywords: human being, transhumanism, dichotomies.

IS SUCCESSFUL AGING IN PERIL? INTERGENERATIONAL TIES TO THE TEST

Atena GASPAR DE ALMEIDA SANTOS1, Petronela NISTOR2    << Back to contents

Abstract
As a “crowned” virus conquered the world in the
spring 2020, our country had to adapt to an entirely new
situation, dominated by uncertainty, doubt, fear and panic.
The fight with an unknown enemy terrified everybody,
especially the old people. This category proved to be the
most vulnerable of all and the huge infection rate as well
as fatalities led to a thorough analysis. Under scrutiny was
the notion of successful aging and the ties with their
families, friends and acquaintances. The role of the
intergenerational relationships was analysed in a period
when a status of apprehension was dominant and the toll
on the human lives was quite high. The “test” imposed by
the new virus brought into light new aspects of aging and
the significance of intergenerational ties during the COVID-
19 pandemic. The qualitative analysis attempted to identify
a series of less examined dimensions, such as the power of
family and non-family intergenerational links, personal
perspectives and behaviours of different generations
during lockdown and the commitment of youngsters
towards old people.
Keywords: successful aging, intergenerational relationships,
pandemic, old generation, young generation, social support.

ALTERING THE DECISION BY DISTORTING THE PRESENTATION OF STATISTICAL INFORMATION

Viorel ŢARCĂ1, Dumitru POPA2, Elena ŢARCĂ3    << Back to contents

Abstract
In any managerial process, the decision must first of all
be well-founded scientifically, based on authentic
information, properly synthesized by applying methods
and techniques that lead to a result based primarily on the
rigorous logic of the phenomenon under investigation and
not statistically significant at any cost.Distortion of
statistical information refers to the usually intentional
distortion of the essence of a data set by the controlled
extraction of most of the component units of a sample
(violating the principles of random selection) - the so-called
“cherry picking” and the distortion of the graphical
representation used in the result dissemination process, in
order to communicate a certain idea about the whole
community under analysis in terms of the vision of a
reality different from that existing in the statistical model
of concrete data. Another way to apply the “cherry picking”
process in combination with “data dredging” (looking for
a potential correlation at any cost) is to search the statistical
significance of the intensity of the link between two or
more investigated variables. The aim of the paper is to
present some common procedures in practice, through
which the process of distorting statistical information is
carried out in order to minimize the possibilities of
occurring decisions that are fundamentally inappropriate.
Keywords: distortion of statistical information, statistical
error, cherry picking, data dredging statistically significant.

STATE POLICIES AND LOCAL PRACTICES IN THE APPLICATION OF THE MEDIA STANDARDS FOR THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

Georgiana Alina POPA1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The role of the media in the Europeanization of the
national public space is exercised not so much in terms of
communicating political messages, but in the ability to
reliably convey information about European lifestyles and
behaviors. The media provides a framework for debating
European issues: it sends messages, explains, interprets
and facilitates the understanding of information. But the
media should also generate that sense of belonging that
every community needs to survive and thrive. It remains
to discover to what extent the public is effectively concerned
with political decisions taken at the level of the European
institutions, and transfers to local politicians the task of
acting on its behalf to express the country’s political
problems.
Keywords: media, audiovisual industry, local practices,
resilience, media pluralism.

RADIO INTERDISCIPLINARITY – A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Alexandru IOAN1    << Back to contents

Abstract
For a long time, scientific discoveries were made in
separate fields, defined by easily identifiable characteristics.
This is how the fan of subjects in which scientists rushed
to get closed in order to properly emphasize the identity
of their preoccupations become larger and larger. The
abstruseness of these entities often led to the rejection of
some new fields that were not, in the beginning, considered
sciences. This quality was only associated with already
known fields such as: philosophy, history, physics,
mathematics, astronomy etc. For centuries, researchers’
preoccupations which went beyond the known and
recognized patterns were accepted with great difficulty
and their disciples had to provide deep evidence that the
new activities meet the criteria required by true science
and are not subsumed by an existing “senior.” From the
same perspective, it was very difficult to persuade scientists
to unite their efforts with those of their peers from other
fields in order to light together some study paths that have
not been approached before. Although this mentality still
continues to exist in the third millennium, a breakthrough
in the twentieth century occurred when, as a result of the
huge leaps made by human beings in all fields, some
approaches, that coagulate the intelligence and experience
of scientists in as many different fields of study as possible,
were strictly imposed. The appearance and development
of information technology, which allowed the generation
and functioning of artificial intelligence, could not have
been possible without connecting all information the
human being possesses and without a collaboration
between all subjects.
Keywords: science, transdisciplinarity, radio journalism,
interdisciplinary research, multidisciplinary education.

PANDEMIC COMMUNICATION: FAKE NEWS, MISINFORMATION AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES VERSUS TRUTH AND TRUST

Mihail ORZEAŢĂ1    << Back to contents

Abstract
The concepts of fake news, misinformation and
conspiracy theories were studied by some of the worlds’
most well-known researchers and their articles contain
both common conclusions and different opinions. The
rapid rise of social networks in the flow of interpersonal
communication, coupled with the outbreak of the COVID-
19 pandemic, highlighted more acutely than a decade ago
the fierce confrontation between promoters of fake news
and misinformation through conspiracy theories, on the
one hand, and the defenders of truth, democracy and trust
in state institutions, on the other hand. Both communication
specialists and virologists and epidemiologists
acknowledge the importance of stopping the flaw of fake
news and misinformation in the relationships between the
administrative and sanitary authorities, on the one hand
and the population, on the other hand, as a success factor
in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Increasing the
trust of the population in the administrative and sanitary
authorities represents another success key in eradicating
infodemic and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Keywords: ampliganda, COVID-19, misinformation,
infodemic, conspiracy theories.

PANDEMIC COMMUNICATION – A CHALLENGE AT THE RIGHT TIME?

Alexandru IOAN1    << Back to contents

Abstract
Long before the isolation caused by the Covid-19
pandemic became a necessity, the practical part of the
lecture entitled “Specialized Radio Work Techniques,”
which I teach the journalism students from Apollonia
University of Iasi, was conducted with the help of the new
technologies. I used the mobile phone and its various
applications in order to replace the recorder, the magnetic
tape and the editing studio in order to exemplify and create
the necessary skills for a radio journalist. “Another life!”
might say some users of the old Nagra recorder which,
from a recording point of view, had similar performances,
weighted over 15 kilos and was not able to record more
than half an hour without interruption. If we look at things
in such a manner, isolation triggered by the pandemic
seems to have come at the right time. Meaning precisely at
that moment in which human intelligence had the necessary
substitutes ready. Information technology had already
created the critical mass of electronic devices capable to
preserving the life of the society in circumstances of …
social isolation. Experts emphasize the fact that restrictions
did not obstruction communication. The numerous social
networks and the already existent devices (television and
mobile telephony) successfully ensured “the normality” of
the human being life. Psychological and psychiatric
consequences that specialists have not yet ruled on are not
taken into account.
Keywords: communication, pandemic, total isolation -
house arrest, SARS-COV-2, SARS-COV-1.

NOLLYWOOD FILMS, FOREIGN MEDIA AND THE NIGERIAN IMAGE CRISIS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Floribert Patrick C. ENDONG1    << Back to contents

Abstract
On the international scene, Nigeria is mainly viewed
in a negative light. The country is actually popularly
associated with such negativities as poverty, corruption,
violent internecine conflicts, terrorism and insecurity
among others. According to many commentators, this
negative image –commonly referred to as Nigeria’s image
crisis – is the logical consequence of factors that range from
poor government reforms to negative local and international
media coverage of the country. However, the causes of
Nigeria’s image crisis have, in the social discourse, been
subject to controversy: conflicting schools of thought have
pontificated on it. Whereas scores of Nigerian observers
blame the international media for misrepresenting Nigeria
and for being the principal cause of its image crisis, a
number of critics rather blame Nigeria’s own media –
notably Nollywood – for tarnishing the country’s image.
Determining the factor which is greatest in the causes of
Nigeria’s image crisis has remained the centre of a social
debate in Nigeria; yet, it has rarely attracted the attention
of scholars. Thus, the above mentioned issue remains an
interesting subject for investigation. In this paper, the
author uses a systematic review of recent literature to
compare Nollywood films and the international media in
terms of their respective contribution to the Nigerian
image crisis. The paper argues that Nollywood films
simply continue, corroborate and intensify foreign media
misrepresentations or negative portrayals of Nigeria.
Keywords: International Media Representation, Nation
Branding, Nigeria’s Image Crisis, Nollywood.

NORM AND OCCURRENCE

Petre ROMAN1    << Back to contents

When we say that life is a mixture of norm
and chance, we offer a significant and attractive
utterance; it seems easy to understand. However,
it does not define anything in a definite,
predictable, usable form. How much is there is
this mixture? Norm means rigour, a stable form
of existence, permanence, symbol. It represents
the known. Occurrence refers to surprise, novelty,
authentic. It represents the unknown. The
occurrence pushes the norm towards new forms,
it creates the circumstances that have to be put
under control. The norm cannot be perfect; it
makes room for occurrence and sometimes it
even provokes it. The unpredictable implies the
norm and explains the accident.
